The Scroll and the Lamb
5 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, βWho is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?β 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, βDo not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.β
6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits[a] of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of Godβs people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying:
βYou are worthy to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign[b] on the earth.β
11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying:
βWorthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!β
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:
βTo him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!β
14 The four living creatures said, βAmen,β and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Jesus Has Risen
24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, βWhy do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 βThe Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.β β 8 Then they remembered his words.
9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
On the Road to Emmaus
13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.
17 He asked them, βWhat are you discussing together as you walk along?β
They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, βAre you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?β
19 βWhat things?β he asked.
βAbout Jesus of Nazareth,β they replied. βHe was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didnβt find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.β
25 He said to them, βHow foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?β 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, βStay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.β So he went in to stay with them.
30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, βWere not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?β
33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, βIt is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.β 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles
7 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want[a] to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. 2 But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, 3 Jesusβ brothers said to him, βLeave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.β 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
6 Therefore Jesus told them, βMy time is not yet here; for you any time will do. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil. 8 You go to the festival. I am not[b] going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.β 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.
10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, βWhere is he?β
12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, βHe is a good man.β
Others replied, βNo, he deceives the people.β 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.
Jesus Teaches at the Festival
14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. 15 The Jews there were amazed and asked, βHow did this man get such learning without having been taught?β
16 Jesus answered, βMy teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?β
20 βYou are demon-possessed,β the crowd answered. βWho is trying to kill you?β
21 Jesus said to them, βI did one miracle, and you are all amazed. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a manβs whole body on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.β
Division Over Who Jesus Is
25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, βIsnβt this the man they are trying to kill? 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah? 27 But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.β
28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, βYes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, 29 but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.β
30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, βWhen the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?β
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.
33 Jesus said, βI am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.β
35 The Jews said to one another, βWhere does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, βYou will look for me, but you will not find me,β and βWhere I am, you cannot comeβ?β
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, βLet anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.β[c] 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, βSurely this man is the Prophet.β
41 Others said, βHe is the Messiah.β
Still others asked, βHow can the Messiah come from Galilee? 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from Davidβs descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?β 43 Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders
45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, βWhy didnβt you bring him in?β
46 βNo one ever spoke the way this man does,β the guards replied.
47 βYou mean he has deceived you also?β the Pharisees retorted. 48 βHave any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the lawβthere is a curse on them.β
50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 βDoes our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?β
52 They replied, βAre you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.β

53 Then they all went home,
